Songs from the Heart of Ontario – Owen Young’s ‘Town Line’

By

Owen Young’s ‘Town Line’ is an emotional compilation of songs set in Southern Ontario incorporating reference and storytelling. The EP, which is an extension to his ‘Muddy River’ album, seeks inspiration from the vivid memories and surroundings of the location. In the first tune, titled “In Everything I Do”, Young manages to evoke a reflective set of mind assisted by the warmth of the acoustic melodies throughout the song. He proceeds to talk about love, emotions, as well as connection. This is followed by a more sorrow-filled track, “I Can’t Believe”, which discusses themes such as disbelief, longing, and gentle framing instruments. “Moon on the Rise” depicts the world as a gentle place while also capturing the spirit of longing for peaceful nights.

“Walk Down the Lane” pulls at the heartstrings as the lyrics are comforting, which lead the audience down old paths down memory lane. This particular track on the EP is the most relatable one due to its soothing arrangement. “We’ll Go Sailing” singlehandedly transports the audience into a world with no limits and endless opportunities. Young’s legendary soft voices are filled with magnificent harmony. Young’s voice gets particularly emotionally raw and tender regarding “”Old Muddy River”, which makes it stand out compared to the album. This gives a vivid depiction of the overarching theme of the album which is highly supported by the content on this track.

The last two pieces, “Straight Rye Whiskey” and “Ontario Home”, capture sentiments of determination and acceptance. The former invokes sombre late-night thoughts through the folk-blues energy it carries, and the latter ends the album on a heartfelt note, serving as a love letter to Ontario. ‘Town Line’ is a delicately made and intimate project that exposes Owen Young to listeners with tenderness.
